    Marie Séférian

    Marie Séférian was born in Münster as daughter of the French chansonnier Jean-Claude Séférian and the chamber musician Christiane Rieger-Séférian. Already at the age of three she wanted to play the violin and took it up to her fourteenth year of violin lessons. Then Marie decided to start with piano and vocals lessons. After graduation, it went further from the classical music to jazz and Marie did entrance exam for jazz singing in Enschede (Netherlands). For two Years she studied there with the lecturers Adrienne West and Silvia Droste, who introduced her to the depths of music. After two years of Dutch town, the Münsteranerin moved to Berlin. Marie Séférian studied there for four years at the Jazzinstitut Berlin (Hanns Eisler / University of the Arts) with Judy Niemack, David Friedman and Peter Weniger. In addition to studying in Berlin, Marie Séférian sang sometimes with the Yamaha Big Band under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer, she toured with the trio “Gerry getz Chet” in Chile (South America), earned a scholarship place with the Yehudi Menhuin Foundation “Live Music Now” and acted as a singer in the movie “Naughty Girl 2″ with.

    In September 2009 she has received the 1st prize at the Berlin Jazz Award with her quartet and her own compositions. With the “Marie Séférian Quartet” she gave several concerts in Lebanon in the summer of 2010 at the Goethe Institut. Séférian did her master’s degree in Lucerne with Lauren Newton and was a lecturer in jazz singing at the University of California Newpark Music School in Dublin (Ireland) from 2011-2012. Besides, in August 2011 the first CD of her trio Gerry getz Chet was released at the Berlin label Octason Records. With the CD release another tour of the trio in Chile (South America) was connected. Marie has made the 3rd place at the International Singing Competition Voicingers in Poland in summer of 2011. In summer 2012 Séférian was in Bengalore (India) for a month as a scholarship holder of the Travel Awards from the Irish Arts Council and has learned Indian singing there with the renowned singer R.A. Ramamani. The Marie Séférian Quartet CD entitled ‘La Princesse de Ferraille’ appeared in the October 2012 at the German Jazz Label NRW Records. Marie was scholarship holder of the Elsa Neumann Foundation for 2013 and as a result, she composed for the Parisian string quartet Equinoxe. In summer 2014 Séférian got another project funding from the Berlin Senate to take Konnokol lessons with the Indian singer R.A. Ramamani in Bengalore (India). In 2015 she released the following CDs: “Mille Nuits” set to music Oriental fairy tales, the album “Dance” from her septet Sémacordes and the CD “Voyage” by the trio Gerry getz Chet. In 2016, Marie Séférian received a six-month scholarship from the Federal Government of Germany for the Cité des Arts (Paris), where she will spend 2018.
